A Day on a Dime and a Night on a Penny

Social activities like going out to nice dinners or going to the movies start to add up fast. Everyone needs to get away from the usual routine of going to class, going to the gym and attempting to cook frozen gnocchi from Trader Joe's just to end up opening a can of soup instead. Going to bars for a night out can rack up a pretty hefty bill, too.

Low and behold, having a great day and an even better night doesn't need to be showered in dollar bills. Instead, you can take the cheap road to fun activities that cost less than you might think.

Hiking/Walking

Taking a day to go to a local hiking trail is a great way to de-stress, get off campus and have a great time. If you pack a couple snacks and some water, going to places like Green Lakes in Syracuse can turn into one of the best days of your year. Hiking/walking can turn into an all-day activity, and can even be a great photo opportunity for those students out there trying to improve their Instagram game. Better yet, this activity is completely free.

Apple Picking

Apple picking is just simply not what it used to be. Most apple orchards have the classic "pick-your-own" activity, but, now, apple orchards include other activities such as cider tastings, wagon rides and more. In Syracuse, New York, Beak and Skiff not only takes over my Instagram feed every fall, but it never fails me as a fun time. The key with these orchards is to enjoy them on the cheap. Picking your own apples usually costs less than $10, and will be hours of fun. Also, hard cider tastings are only $10 and, if you wait until later in October to make your visit, Beak and Skiff usually gives away cider donuts for free - offering 1/2 off for a dozen. Patience is key.

Happy Hour

As I've mentioned in Girls Gotta Eat happy hour is such a fun way to get off campus and hang out with friends while sticking to your budget. Take advantage of happy hour deals at Mexican restaurants, especially. Usually Mexican restaurants have the best deals for happy hours including 1/2 price tacos or margaritas. Splitting a pitcher of drinks for larger groups is also a great way to cut down your final bill. Pro tip - if they offer free chips and salsa... never say no.

Ticketed Events

Student prices for concert tickets and sports games at universities are more than half the cost of regular tickets. Most cities also have minor league sports teams. Since minor league games aren't very well attended, tickets are usually less than half the cost of major league games (tickets in the 100 level for Tampa Bay Lightning is $208 while 100 level for Syracuse Crunch is $34). These games also often have fun promotions, giveaways or themed nights that are always a fun way to have a night off campus with friends.

Site Seeing

Any city, small or large, has some level of site seeing. Larger cities will have more to look at, but if you do a little research, finding museums with low-cost, student admission. Site seeing is also a great way to get to know your city while spending a day with friends for free or a small fee.

Finally, never feel like you have to spend $100 on an expensive dinner, movie or concert just to have a fun day/night. When you're with friends, any day or night activity can be a blast and a half.
